Arley Remembrance Weekend 2023
The Royal British Legion, Arley Branch and St. Wilfrid’s Church had a full weekend of activities for Remembrance this year. For months, the Knit and Natter group at Arley Methodist Church had been busy knitting and crocheting poppies to make a poppy cascade to hang on the wall behind the War Memorial.
With the cascade duly in place, St. Wilfrid’s was open with displays celebrating Arley’s history and claims to fame (George Eliot’s grandparents are buried in the graveyard) and an opportunity for recollections to be shared. Radio Producers Eloise and Tony were on hand to record personal stories about life in Arley and hopes and dreams for the village’s future.
In the Barn, refreshments were served throughout the weekend and Crafters demonstrated their skills.
The Service of Remembrance is always well attended and those who made the ultimate sacrifice were respectfully honoured by many villagers. A wonderful concert was given by the Midland Brass Ensemble on Sunday afternoon and a packed church enjoyed war time music and a sing along led by Rev. Steve Medley, accompanied on the keyboard by Frances Langlands, wife of Rev. John, former Curate in Arley.
Huge thanks to all who contributed to making the weekend such a success.
